Tennis > Stosur favoured to lift French crown
June 3, 2010
Barnstorming Australian Sam Stosur is now the favourite to lift the French Open women's singles trophy despite having never reached a grand slam final.
Stosur's epic wins over Justine Henin and Serena Williams, to reach her second French semi-final in as many years, have seen her price sucked in to $2.30 after being as generous as $75 when trailing Henin by a set in the round of 16.
"We already know this is a monumental effort by Sam, but it is put into greater context when you consider she's been written off by punters around the world in her last two matches," said Betfair spokesman Mathew Thompson.
"However, there were some loyal Stosur supporters that took the tournament winners odds of $75 against Henin and the $20 against Serena and they've been rewarded handsomely."
Stosur is seeking to become Australia's first singles champion in Paris since the prolific Margaret Court captured the women's singles crown in 1973.
Her semi-final opponent will be Jelena Jankovic, while Francesca Schiavone faces Elena Dementieva in the other semi.
