Australian Rules > Crows down Demons by 44 points
By Steve Larkin June 27, 2010
Adelaide forward Kurt Tippett kicked four goals to help the Crows down Melbourne by 44 points in Sunday's AFL match.
Adelaide notched just their fourth win of the season, 16.21 (117) to Melbourne's 11.7 (73) at AAMI Stadium.
Tippett's haul was decisive for the Crows, who were best served by skipper Simon Goodwin, who collected 36 disposals, and his co-defender Graham Johncock (32 touches).
Melbourne forward Matthew Bate battled gamely for a four-goal return while veteran Cameron Bruce and emerging onballers Jack Trengove and Tom Scully were prominent.
The Crows built their victory platform in a dominant first half when they controlled all aspects to have 19 scoring shots to Melbourne's eight.
Adelaide, with Tippett kicking three opening-half goals and 20-year-old small forward Matthew Jaensch booting two, had established a match-defining 9.10 to 3.5 lead by the main break.
Tippett's presence as a marking target gave Adelaide direction on many forays forward as the home side displayed a cohesion lacking previously in their dismal year.
The Crows attacked in waves, with Goodwin and Johncock often the creators from half-back.
The Demons were a stark contrast, their midfield and forwards smothered by their opponents and unable to stem the tide in defence.
But that tide turned in the third term, as Melbourne rallied with five goals to one to reduce the margin to 25 points at the last change.
The Demons lifted their intensity around the packs and found some goal-kicking avenues in Bate, who kicked two majors for the quarter.
Melbourne's revival coincided with a period of waste by the Crows, who butchered many opportunities to register an inaccurate 1.9 for the quarter compared to the visitors' 5.1.
Tippett then left his imprint on the result with his fourth goal to open the scoring in the last quarter, setting his side on course for a deserved triumph before 34,422 spectators.
Adelaide's win was somewhat spoiled by what appeared a serious ankle injury to winger David Mackay, who was helped from the ground early in the second quarter and taken to hospital for assessment.
Adelaide hosts Essendon on Saturday night, while Melbourne confront in-form St Kilda next Sunday.
